Well Planning

Operators are faced with increasing challenges to economically develop hydrocarbon resources.  To fully utilize the wells production potential longer horizontal sections are being drilled and completed. The construction of 10K+ ERD wells especially represents significant engineering challenges. Substantial increases in Torque & Drag that are associated with increasing horizontal wellbore departure pose increasing difficulties to control the BHA. Frequently the increased circulation pressure also limits the torque / power capability of the motor and is an additional contributor to some of the disappointing drilling rates seen in long horizontal applications.

During the planning phase of a well, it is critical that factors influencing the successful completion of a well are well understood and incorporated into the well plan. A clear definition of the critical line items will also aid in establishing a better risk assessment and ultimately results into a higher certainty for success. As a result, key performance indicators can be established to initiate an optimization process that will yield continuous improvement.

On January 25th, 2018 the IADD will provide a forum for software providers, well planners, directional coordinators and drilling engineers to explore the well planning process and its mission-critical elements. The event will consist of various presentations and discussions to provide an update on the state of the art and provide a view for future developments that would assist in approving the accuracy of the planning process.

The presentation will show how WellScan is used in the planning stages of a well to identify potential risks in terms of anti-collision, T&D, and BHA capabilities. Then will show the use of the software in optimizing the well by eliminating/mitigating the potential risks and ensuring the success of the well.

Speaker Haitham Batneej – Drilling Engineer, Drillscan

Haitham is currently a Drilling Optimization Engineer at DrillScan. Since joining DrillScan in 2017, he has worked on many projects involved in drilling optimization for wells from Saudi to west Texas. In his previous position he worked for Devon Energy for two years where he was heavily involved in increasing drilling efficiency in their New Mexico wells. Haitham started his career in the field working for Schlumberger first as an MWD and then a Directional Driller where he gained experience drilling horizontal wells with both steerable mud motors and RSS. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston in 2010.
