“Creating a High-Capacity BHA” Extended-Luncheon Series Part II

Operators are faced with increasing challenges to economically develop hydrocarbon resources. To fully utilize the wells’ production potential, longer horizontal sections are being drilled and completed. Substantial increases in torque and drag, which are associated with increasing horizontal wellbore departure, can pose BHA control difficulties. While the deployment of rotary steerable systems usually overcome some of
the issues, it is the WOB and torque capability of the entire BHA that continues to be a major improvement opportunity.

While Part 1 of the series focused on providing best condition for success through proper stress modeling and inspection processes. Bending moments of up to 65 K ft-lbs have been calculated and associated connection failures along with proper inspection protocols discussed.

The second part of our series concentrates on improving the load capacity of rotary shouldered connections and their compatibility with various types of MWD systems that maybe used in horizontal BHA’s. Followed by the lead in comments of a major operator, three of the largest drill pipe/drill collar manufacturers will provide a summary of the type of rotary shouldered connections typically used, their latest innovations of premium threads, and how they compare to API standard connections.

MWD providers are scheduled to review their tool capability and discuss their possible compatibility with high capacity rotary shouldered connections.

During the event the need for the potential development of a BHA specific premium connection and compatibility requirements for MWD system will be discussed.

Donations Requested

Over the years, the IADD has partnered with Operation Military Embrace, Inc., (OME)—a Texas-based tax-exempt/non-profit 501(c)(3) military support organization that’s helps America’s seriously injured and ill Warriors and their families in their time of need—through the donation of cash and household items (toys, kitchen items, linens, etc.).

This year, we’d like to invite attendees to our Houston chapter luncheons to bring items (clothes, gift cards, food items, etc.), which will then be given to wounded service members at Camp Hope (Houston campus for the PTSD Foundation), as well as other private and VA facilities throughout the year.
