Description

MWD Data Transmission Improvements

Presented By: Joe Gremillion - Schlumberger

The economical window to successfully explore and develop hydrocarbon resources has shrunk substantially at the level of oil prices seen during the last couple of years. Accurate horizontal wellbore placement, mitigation of drilling dysfunctions, and optimum frac placement have become mission critical success factors for the operators. Due to enormous investments in research and engineering, our industry has made significant headway to understand the influencing factors and to deploy downhole data acquisition technology to provide the fundamental information required to maximize the production potential while minimizing risk. Consequently, the availability of faster data transmission systems has become a key requirement to provide real-time information for better and timely decision making.

A new generation of MWD tool has been developed that uses faster data rates to allow transmission of Rotary steerable and GR data even at high ROP’s. The tool can also be configured with an azimuthal GR sensor for real-time measurement of formation dip, allowing more precise Geosteering in thinner targets and more detailed geological interpretation.  Transmitting images, continuous inclination, RSS and GR data all at the same time allows for drilling wells more precisely without slowing down the drilling operation for data quality. Joe will present several examples showing the application of the new tool and new data transmission schemes that are being applied across North America.

Please join us on Oct. 26th at Southwestern Energy’s HQ location at 10000 Energy Drive in Spring from 11:00 Am to 1:00 PM. This again represents a great discussion and learning opportunity that you don’t want to miss.

Speaker Chris Ely - President, Janel Energy Services / CEO, Wellsite.com

Chris is currently the President of Janel Energy Services Incorporated and has more than 20 years of drilling exploration knowledge and experience. He began his oilfield career in 1996 with Nabors Industries after graduating college with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Business Administration from Sam Huston State University. Chris diversified his knowledge and experience by entering the field of fluids engineering and worked in the drilling market throughout the U.S. West Coast until 1999 when he joined Schlumberger as an MWD/LWD Engineer. Since 1999, Chris has dedicated his career to directional drilling services and has held positions spanning three continents and more than eight countries. He has assisted directional drilling companies with technical process writing, operations management, risk analysis and training programs, while creating structure for a successful business model that ensures customer focus and reliability. In 2013, he became the Global Optimization Manager at Phoenix Technology Services where he assisted with structure and implementation of remote operations centers in North America. Chris continues to write technical papers and processes and has created successful operations structures for delivering on performance and reliability.
