Description

Title: The Effect of Bit Type on Reactive Torque and Consequent Toolface Control Anomalies

Presentation Summary:

This presentation covers the results of drillstring dynamics tests conducted on a full-scale test rig in which downhole weight, torque, differential pressure and toolface orientation were measured at 100 Hz while sliding with a motor/AKO BHA.  The authors were seeking to identify how toolface orientation reacts to formation transitions and perturbations in bit weight with various bit types.  The presentations  identifies a common toolface-orientation dysfunction  which we call a Fast Torque Anomaly (FTA).  FTAs are a sudden flip of the BHA of about 360o and they occur because the bent motor has a preferred angular orientation in a curved borehole.  When there are multiple wraps of pipe, the BHA flips between preferred orientations which consist of more or fewer wraps of pipe.  FTAs are not identifiable in the data normally available to a directional driller.  At the surface, they simply appear as a profound loss of toolface control.

Featured Speakers
Speaker L.W. (Roy) Ledgerwood III

Roy Ledgerwood is a Technical Adviser for Baker Hughes in Drill Bit Research.  He began his career forty years ago with Hughes Tool Company.   His research currently focuses on bit and drill string dynamics, and rock destruction under high pressure.  He earned a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University where he studied with John  Cheatham.  He is the author of twenty-three technical papers and holds twelve patents.
