A Message from the MWD Chairman
"Roadmap to the Future"

If you believe what your parents told you, and what you have likely told your children, the future is one of endless possibilities. But should it be? Should future possibilities be so infinite, or should we plan for something structured or engineered to achieve a specific result?

For the last two years, I have attended “d5: The Next Big Thing”, which is held in conjunction with the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) on the Friday after the conference. The speakers are always tremendously impressive. Last year, I returned charged up and ready to change our world with ideas about leveraging social media to make critical decisions, 3D printing, automation and creating an industry-related video game. This year, the keynote speaker, Vivek Wadhwa, said something that really resonated with this movie buff: “Ask yourself: Can we build a Star Trek future? Because if not, the alternative is Mad Max.”

What does this have to do with MWD? I want the Star Trek future, and I believe the only way to achieve it is to plan for it. I am not satisfied with what technology has allowed us to do thus far (which, by the way, has been truly amazing), because there is still so much to do. Consider the following:

• With the advent of self-driving cars, couldn’t we plan for and develop self-drilling BHAs, including BHAs capable of self-diagnostics? (How am I? Where am I? How did I get here, and where am I going?)

• Couldn’t we improve the reliability of our tools and increase the Mean Time between Failures (MTBF) of an MWD tool by, say, a factor of 10, or 100, or 1000 or more?

• Are we satisfied with the current data transmission rates of a typical pulsing style tool, or should we be pushing the bounds of wired, wireless and alternative communication?

• Shouldn’t we know the BHL of our wells in terms of feet rather than hundreds of feet?

I don’t think I am alone in asking these questions; otherwise, we would not all be here to discuss the future.

When I say we have to plan for it, what I really mean is we need to envision our future at a specific point in time. Once we have that vision, we can begin to work backwards from that point and “reverse engineer” the steps it will take to get us to our desired goals.

I hope this forum allows for discussion of these things and more. Thank you in advance for your attendance and contribution.

Many industries have developed and followed a roadmap that helps guide their technology development. The energy industry, as a whole, has been lacking such a path, as market conditions and demands have normally driven innovation. This has resulted in many false starts and failed developments as either conditions did not warrant the new technology or it failed to gain market acceptance.

Measurement-while-drilling (MWD) is a mature and essential technology for drilling, but where is it going next? What are the needs of the end users? Are there new, disruptive technologies and/or processes that can fundamentally change the current practice?

IADD invites you to join operators, service companies and manufacturers at our second annual Technology Forum Series, featuring MWD systems, for an in-depth look at where we are today and where we can and need to go in the future. Join us as we collectively develop a roadmap for the future.
