Description

“Creating a High-Capacity BHA” Extended-Luncheon Series Part 1

Operators are faced with increasing challenges to economically develop hydrocarbon resources. To fully utilize the wells’ production potential, longer horizontal sections are being drilled and completed. Substantial increases in torque and drag, which are associated with increasing horizontal wellbore departure, can pose BHA control difficulties. Frequently, increased circulation pressures can limit the torque/power capability of the motor. This can be a contributing factor in some of the disappointing drilling rates seen in long horizontal applications.

One of the most obvious fixes is to simply increase WOB and RPM to overcome the friction-induced limitations to maintain acceptable levels of ROP. While this is a credible attempt, many have experienced fatigue and catastrophic failures of the BHA that usually result in costly remedial operations. While the deployment of rotary steerable systems usually overcome some of the issues, it is the WOB and torque capability of the entire BHA that continues to be a major improvement opportunity.

The IADD Houston Chapter is hosting a three-part luncheon series to help shed some light on the issues, improvement opportunities, and available solutions to create a profile for a high-capacity BHA. Speakers from operators, oilfield tubular manufacturers, MWD providers, directional service companies, and downhole motor companies will present.

The extended-lunch series will take place the fourth Thursday of July, August and September.

Donations Requested

Over the years, the IADD has partnered with Operation Military Embrace, Inc., (OME)—a Texas-based tax-exempt/non-profit 501(c)(3) military support organization that’s helps America’s seriously injured and ill Warriors and their families in their time of need—through the donation of cash and household items (toys, kitchen items, linens, etc.).

This year, we’d like to invite attendees to our Houston chapter luncheons to bring items (clothes, gift cards, food items, etc.), which will then be given to wounded service members at Camp Hope (Houston campus for the PTSD Foundation), as well as other private and VA facilities throughout the year.
