Description

A number of operators, motor manufacturers, service companies and other engineering firms shall be collaborating, starting early in 2017, on some extensive instrumented and tests of mud motors both in dynamometers and downhole at temperature and under pressure.  The purpose of this joint-industry project is to gain a quantified understanding of the various influences on mud motor performance and related dynamics when drilling in order to optimize the drilling process and make better drilling decisions.

The anticipated deliverables from this venture include: (1) learning how to use real-time information from downhole sensors to improve motor life and performance; (2) fewer unnecessary bit trips; (3) a method for grading mud motors after a bit run in order to safely re-run them when appropriate; and (4) reducing the overall CAPEX expenditure required per foot drilled.

If you are not already involved and are interested in joining this collaboration, please contact Mark Hutchinson at:

There shall be a review of the joint-industry project proposal and work-scope at the offices of Southwestern Energy in Spring, Texas starting at 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. on October 27th (following the regular IADD monthly luncheon)
