Today’s drilling operation workflows are dynamic. Thus, the collaboration tools for data collection and exchange must be extremely flexible in order to adapt to changing workflows.

WITSML combined with Web 2.0 technologies enables the transfer and interpretation of data into usable, translated and information. The stakeholder decision loops can be accommodated with any workflow revision between drilling, G&G and Sub-sea domains during well planning and execution.
Members of the drilling industry have voiced concerns with ever changing workflows:
  • Drillers use 1-inch per 100-ft (30.5-m) correlation logs for well planning and drilling surveillance.
  • Drillers have difficulty finding bit records and mud recaps when needed
  • Timely information from multiple vendors using diverse data sets at rig sites causes delays
  • Engineers and managers using text based morning reports to monitor well progress and other important information is an inefficient use of their time
  • Up to 60% of rig planning time is lost searching for relevant data
  • Up to 35% of project intervals are still consumed by non-productive time
  • Drilling project collaboration by the stakeholders is conducted with e-mail and telephone communications, which is extremely inefficient
These are valid industry concerns and at least one company took the challenge to solve them.

Moblize, Inc. developed a vendor neutral solution that solves these concerns using industry standards. Their Darp Rig Site Server utilizes WITSML – the industry standard. The application collects disparate raw data in real time from MWD, LWD, Wireline, Cementing, Drilling contractors and creates a single log library at the rig. This information is then accessible to geologist, drillers and sub-sea team members using a secured Internet connection in real time from one place for monitoring well health as time or depth log curves. The solution is also complimented by single drop box housing project reports, wireline picture files, well site reports in any format etc.

Furthermore, all the logs housed in the Darp rig server can be automatically sent to users preferred interpretation tools like KSI Predict, Perform View, Petrel, Rig state detection viewers, Geo steering applications etc. and optimize well bore stability. This visualization of static, real time information from a single location on the web and ability to feed the same data automatically into variety of analytic applications automatically allows the stakeholders to make intelligent decisions based on real time information such as
  • Review tangent sections in near real time to locate one or more target beds to softly land the well at precisely the desired well orientation.
  • Watch turn points closely: Within 1 ft guiding directional driller to turn or stop drilling or continue drilling.
  • Enhance collaboration amongst them to make better faster decisions
The Moblize Darp Rig Site server features include:
  • Single log library to aggregate all vendor rig/well site data
  • Easy to set up requiring less than 15 minutes
  • Seamlessly feed logging data into any vendors Geo-steering applications to enhance coordination amongst stakeholders and avoid going out of zones
  • Upgrade is available for support of machine language conversion to WITSML enabling you to control your wells from office if desired.
  •  Unique data transformation function provides flexible data exchange, to allow your engineers to run streaming data against their calculations like pore pressure calculations, drilling efficiency calculations etc
Managers can dynamically respond and change workflows for any reason while making intelligent decisions based on real time analytics results in competitive advantages for the all of the stakeholders. Thus, the benefits of the adoption of WITSML combined with Web 2.0 technologies far outweigh the cost.

About Moblize

Founded in 2003, Moblize offers real-time drilling, production and collaboration solutions based on new E&P standards namely WITSML, ProdML and ResqML. Mr. Amit Mehta, Founder & CEO - MoblizeAmit Mehta, Founder & CEO of Moblize said the company’s vision is to, “help key decision makers regardless of the where they are located on the earth connect, share and collaborate to make better decisions. ”

Mehta has 10 years of business strategy experience with a focus on implementation of real-time solutions in the aerospace, retail, mining, oil and gas, and financial sectors. Under Mehta’s leadership, Moblize has experienced an average of 250% growth each year since 2005 and formed strategic partnerships with Schlumberger and Smith Services. Moblize won a National Silver Award in 2007 for “One of the most innovative real time solutions” for a deployment at Kelpetro Operating, an oil and gas producer. The award was presented by M2M magazine based on the analysis of The Yankee Group and the IDC Group. Moblize was ranked as a top company to watch in 2007 by M2M magazine.

Mehta has written numerous articles appearing in industry and technology magazines including Automation World, Control Magazine, Remote Magazine, Digital Energy Journal, M2M Magazine, and Hart E&P. Mehta has conducted strategy workshops on the future of real-time technology at the invitation of Intel Research Labs. Mehta attended Cambridge University in the Manufacturing and Leadership Program. Prior to joining Moblize, Mehta held senior management positions at Manugistics & McKinsey.
