The objective of this project wasw to drill a 6 1/8-in. horizontal section. Based on previous experience, the well’s high levels of torque and drag precluded using conventional directional drilling technology.
Data acquired using the EMpulse telemetry system provided command controls for the Revolution rotarysteerable system, allowing the horizontal section to be successfully geosteered from 2,798 to 7,200 ft (852 to 2,195 m) measured depth (MD). The average rate of penetration (ROP) was 33.6 ft/hr in two bit runs with underbalanced conditions maintained throughout the operation.
Value to Client
Using Weatherford’s Revolution and EMpulse MWD systems allowed the operator to access zones that could not typically be logged or reached under prevailing conditions. This operation was the first successful use of rotary-steerable system technology using electromagnetic transmission anywhere in the world.

The Revolution rotary-steerable system, combined with Weatherford MWD/LWD systems, can drill the most complex 3D well paths, operating at up to 329°F (165°C) and at pressures as high as 29,000 psi (173 MPa).
