Bill Bailey has over 30 years experience in the oil and gas industry. Trained as a petrophysicist, Bill has been involved in operations, sales and marketing and management in the wireline, directional drilling and, for the past 15 years, manufacturing of M/LWD collars. The MWD industry has developed from rocket science 20 years ago to a growing technology that has fundamentally changed the way wells are drilled and evaluated. The IADD should become a voice for this industry that furthers the knowledge of new technological advancements as well as be a source for information to help train new members of the drilling community. |

OPERATOR’S CHALLENGE – Cantarell-2119 heavy oil well is located offshore Mexico, water depth 46 m (150 feet), in a block bounded by faults on both the east and west, presenting challenges that include total lost circulation zones and rock with high compressive strength averaging about 35,000 to 40,000 psi. There is high risk for differential sticking, borehole instability and pack-off conditions that can result in high non-productive time (NPT), loss of geological targets and higher costs. The challenge was to optimize the drilling performance throughout the well.

OPERATOR’S CHALLENGE – An operator in the Louisiana Haynesville shale play required reliable and accurate measurement/logging-while-drilling (M/LWD) data while drillling horizontal wells in an extreme high temperature environment. Sperry Drilling services was challenged to provide a suitable M/LWD system for drilling the long horizontal sections of the wells, where typical static bottom hole temperature exceeds the 347°F (175°C) rating of current industry-standard high temperature tools.

The stakeholders involved in drilling for oil and gas collaborate by collecting and sharing information. Historically this was accomplished by transferring data in a multitude of file types. The industry adopted Wellsite Information Transfer Standard Markup Language (WITSML) to standardize the transmission of technical data from rig to town in the petroleum industry.

Varel’s patent pending DRIMP technology takes Geo-Science analysis to a new level by providing the driller with a virtual roadmap of the wellbore. Drilling Impedance (DRIMP) measures the drilling efficiency performed by the drilling assembly. The figures are then combined to calculate rock properties and porosity, abnormalities while drilling, and possible gas-bearing depleted zones.
